MATCH REPORTS
November 2nd
Haywards Heath 1888 7 : 0 Marle Place Wanderers
Place were up against it from the start against high-flying and unbeaten Haywards Heath at a wet and windy Neville Fields, starting the match with a bare 11 players. Although HH went ahead on 10 mins with a scrappy goal, Place were passing the ball well, defending solidly (Stu Ellmer in particular at left back having a great game) and threatening occasionally. Losing Ads Chilcott to injury on 30 mins didn't help matters with n subs available, but HH only managed one further goal before the break as Place ran themselves ragged trying to stay in the game. After the break, a noticeable change of tactic by HH saw them resorting to long range shooting, and in the difficult conditions this proved the difference, Mack Sinclair in the Place goal being able to do nothing about some excellent strikes on 52, 55, 70 and 80 minutes. These, together with a close range effort on 85 minutes gave the scoreline a somewhat unfair look as a depleted Place could be proud of their efforts on the day.
October 26th
Marle Place Wanderers 2 : 3 Broadbridge Heath
Place continue to improve, but for the second time this season they lost to the odd goal against Heath in an entertaining match. Stand-in keeper Jamie Nicholson failed to hold a cross in the third minute to gift heath the opener, but Place were immediately back at Heath, Dave Sadler going close after a mazy run by Jacob Hemsley and Jake Chantler charging upfield and seeing the ball cleared. Another great move involving Ads Chilcott, Hemsley and Isaac Collins saw Josh Arnold fire just over the bar before Arnold earned a penalty for a trip. The heath keeper intially saved this, but was rightly judged to have been way off his line when the kick was taken, and Arnold thumped in the equaliser from the retake on 18 mins. Collins then put place ahead on 25 mins after Chilcott won the ball in midfield before some sloppy defending allowed Heath and equaliser 5 mins later. The second half was tighter, with fewer chances for either side, but Nicholson did well to keep out on Heath effort. On 87 mins heath stole the points after poor marking allowed the striker too much space and he gave Nicholson no chance with a powerful finish from the right hand side.

Little Common Youth 6 : 0 Marle Place Wanderers
Despite the scoreline, this was a decent performance against a County league u18 team
October 5th
Hailsham Town 2 : 0 Marle Place Wanderers
A fast-improving Place are still seeking their first points of the season after another close and hard-fought encounter saw them eventually succumb to Hailsham on the Town’s top-notch main pitch. With both teams working hard, there were few clear-cut chances in a tight first half and neither keeper was properly tested, but on 30 minutes Hailsham took the lead, a cross in from the left finding the attacker unmarked and he directed his header low into the corner. Stu Ellmer then made a good last-ditch clearance off the line to prevent Hailsham doubling the lead, but for large parts of the half Place more than matched their opponents for skill and endeavour. This continued in the second half, with the back four of Gillam, Hill, Chantler and Ellmer looking solid and Dave Sadler in particular threatening going forward but Place did look vulnerable on the break and it was only a sensational point-blank save from Mack Sinclair on 60 mins from a Hailsham corner that kept the game alive. The game continued to open up as both teams tired on the large pitch and Hailsham sealed the win with their second goal on 80 mins with a cool finish. Whilst they remain rooted to the bottom of the league at this early stage, there are clear signs that the partly new team is starting to gel, and some better results are on the horizon.
September 28th
Marle Place Wanderers 3 : 4 Broadbridge Heath (AET - 90 mins 3: 3)
After a difficult start to the season, Place approached this game with some trepidation, but as it turned out they were unlucky to lose a hard fought, even game with Heath in extra time. Place took the lead on 8 mins, Isaac Collins deftly lobbing the keeper after a great pass from Jake Hill. Heath had the best of the play in the minutest that followed, but Place doubled their lead on 20 minutes, a fantastic crossfield pass from Josh Arnold finding Jamie Nicholson, whose shot was parried only for David Sadler to fire in the loose ball. Keeper Mack Sinclair then made a superb save from a Heath free kick before Sam Rogers came close after good work by Oli Gillam. Poor defending gifted Heath a goal to make it 2 : 1 just before half time, and whilst place had opportunities early in the second half to increase their lead, Heath equalised on 59 mins against the run of play despite Sinclair’s best efforts. Heath then hit the post before taking the lead as both teams flagged somewhat in the very hot conditions, but on 85 mins a fine Place move involving Sinclair, Stu Ellmer and Ads Chilcott led to Sadler chasing the final pass and forcing the defender to place the ball into his own net. Both teams did well to summon up the energy for 7 mins each way of extra time as some started to suffer cramps, and it was Heath who snatched victory on 95 mins with a scrappy goal from a corner as both sides created chances to seal the tie.
21st September
Marle Place Wanderers 1 : 2 Sedlescombe
The teams appeared pretty evenly matched in the opening exchanges, with chances at both ends, Jack Wells and Jamie Nicholson both threatening and Mack Sinclair in the Place goal making a series of fine saves. Despite Sedlescombe having progressively more of the game, it was Place that took the lead on 29 minutes with a headed own goal coming from a Jack Wells corner. In the second half, with Place too slow to attack the ball and with their passing too often inaccurate, it was no surprise when Sedlecombe equalised with a firmly struck effort from the edge of the box giving Sinclair no chance. On 68 minutes Sedlescombe scored what proved to be the winning goal, poor marking at a corner allowing free header which was duly netted. As far as Place chances are concerned, a good run from Josh Arnold threatened but he was unable to get the ball onto his favoured left foot to apply the finish and apart from that there were few decent chances to speak of in a somewhat lacklustre performance. Mack Sinclair again impressed with his overall keeping, with one particularly excellent save, and Jake Chantler worked tirelessly in the centre of defence.
14th September
Hastings Youth 5 : 0 Marle Place Wanderers
Place started this game well, Isaac Collins having his speculative effort (or cross ?) tipped over in the first minute, and then Jack Wells had chance to open the scoring after Dave Sadler burst down the left but saw his effort fly just wide. At the other end the danger was clear as Sam Rogers did well to clear the ball off the line, but Hastings were soon a goal up following a defensive error and a cool finish. Mack Sinclair then made an excellent save before Hastings' 'Route One' approach brought them a second goal. Wells then had a great chance to pull a goal back on 38 mins after breaking through the centre but his shot was high and wide before Hastings effectively killed the game as a contest by getting their third on 41 mins. Further goals on 62 and 64 mins made the scoreline look a little harsh on Place, Jake Chantler, Josh Arnold and Mack Sinclair in particular all having good games.
7th September
Patcham United 2 : 1 Marle Place Wanderers
After several close-season departures and arrivals, it was a different looking Place team that took on Patcham in the season's opener at Braypool. Patcham dominated he first half and were somewhat unlucky not to score before the break, hitting the woodwork a couple of times and being denied by new Place keeper Mack Sinclair who immediately impressed. Patcham did get the ball in the net just before half time but saw the goal ruled out for offside. At the start of the second half Jamie Nicholson went close, firing just over after good work by Dave Sadler, and on 53 mins Patcham broke the deadlock, Place losing the ball on the left and crossed in for a good headed goal. Place responded, and equalised on 69 mins, Dave Sadler with a well placed finish across the keeper from Ads Chilcott's pass. Patcham always looked the more likely to snatch a winner, and so it proved with a good individual goal on 85 mins although the Place marking left something to be desired. So, a hard season ahead and plenty of work to do.
